About Kathmandu

Kathmandu, the largest and the capital city of Nepal, is the centre of history, art, culture and economy. It is situated in a bowl-shaped valley that is historically termed as ‘Nepal Mandala’ and characterised by historic sites, ancient temples, shrines and villages. The name Kathmandu is derived from the Pahari word ‘wood shelter’ referring to an abode of serenity and peace. No wonder this city is bustling with tourists all year round!

Wander through the fascinating streets and alleyways of the city that have much to offer. You can discover shrines and statues hidden in unlikely places. Head to Boudhanath Stupa which observes thousands of pilgrims daily or visit the Langtang National Park.

The holiest Hindu shrine in Nepal, Pashupatinath Temple is stretched across both banks of the beautiful Bagmati River. This shrine is devoted to Lord Shiva and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
