Conditions for the carriage of battery powered wheelchair/mobility aids

 

If you are travelling with a battery-driven wheelchair, please note that carriage is subject to DGCA carriage of dangerous goods regulations.

For hassle-free and safe transport, you should inform Vistara at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure and we recommend that you reach the airport at least 2 hours prior to departure.

To ensure prior approval and appropriate handling of the wheelchair, you will need to give information about the specifications of your wheelchair/battery (e.g. manufacturer, make & model, type of battery etc.) by completing the form.

Please submit the form at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure. We also recommend you keep a copy handy when you reach the airport.

 

BATTERY POWERED WHEELCHAIR FORM

 

1. Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with non-spillable wet batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries or dry batteries.

  • Carry-On baggage - No
  • Checked-In baggage - Yes

The following conditions must be observed:

  • The batteries must be in compliance with the IATA DGR Regulations.
  • The batteries are either:
    • Adequately protected against damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid. The electrical circuits must be isolated following the manufacturer’s instructions; or
    • Removed from the mobility aid following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The removed or spare batteries will also be carried in the Cargo compartment in strong, rigid packaging.
  • The battery terminals are protected from short circuits, e.g., by being enclosed within a battery container.
  • One spare wet, non-spillable battery meeting Special Provision A67; or two spare nickel-metal hydride batteries meeting Special Provision A199 or dry batteries meeting Special Provision A123 may also be carried.
     

2. Battery-powered wheelchairs with lithium-ion batteries where the design of the wheelchair provides adequate protection for the batteries.

  • Carry-On baggage - No
  • Checked-In baggage - Yes

The following conditions must be observed:

  • The batteries must be in compliance with the IATA DGR Regulations.
  • The batteries must remain securely attached to the mobility aid.
  • The battery terminals are protected from short circuits, e.g., by being enclosed within a battery container.
  • Spare batteries will be carried in the Cabin.
  • A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium-ion battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh.
     

3. Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with removable lithium-ion batteries where the design of the mobility aid does not provide adequate protection for the battery(ies)

  • Carry-On baggage (Removed Battery) - Yes
  • Checked-In baggage (Mobility aid without battery) - Yes

The following conditions must be observed: 

  • The batteries must be in compliance with the IATA DGR Regulations
  • The batteries must be removed from the mobility aid or spare batteries must be carried in the cabin.
  • Watt hours rating of removed batteries or spare batteries must not exceed 300 Wh.
  • A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium-ion battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh.
  • The terminals must be individually protected to prevent short circuits and must also be protected from damage.

Wheelchairs/Mobility Aids with Spillable Batteries - Not permitted on Vistara.

If you want to keep the wheelchair until the aircraft door, please inform us in advance by calling our 24 x 7 Customer Service Centre – +91 9289228888 or write us at specialservices@airvistara.com. For Club Vistara Platinum, Gold & Silver members - +91 8130088888. The Vistara staff will try their best to get the wheelchair until the door basis on the availability of a ramp or overhead lift and the security procedure of the airport. After successful onboarding, the wheelchair will then be loaded into the aircraft.

On Arrival, the Vistara team will try their best to return the wheelchair at the gate. If it’s not possible due to some unavailability, Vistara will make sure that there is a wheelchair available to assist you to the baggage reclaim area.
